Heat Pump & HVAC Rebates for Fremont Homes in 2026

In 2026, Fremont homeowners can no longer claim the federal 25C tax credit for new heat pumps or AC, because it ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. Incentives now come mainly from regional and state programs aimed at heat pumps and heat pump water heaters. Amounts and availability change through the year, so confirm before you sign.

What changed

The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) had offered up to $2,000 a year for qualifying heat pumps and heat pump water heaters, plus smaller amounts for other upgrades. Federal legislation in 2025 ended it for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. If you installed in 2025, you may still be able to claim it on that year’s return; talk to your tax preparer.

Where to look now

These are the places we check for Fremont addresses. Programs open, pause and change amounts, and some are income-qualified. We are not a tax advisor, and nothing here is a promise of a specific rebate.

  • Bay Area Regional Energy Network (BayREN) home programs
  • TECH Clean California, often paid to the installing contractor as a discount
  • Ava Community Energy, Fremont’s electricity generation provider
  • PG&E rebate and rate programs, including electrification rate plans
  • California income-qualified programs funded through the Inflation Reduction Act
  • The Switch Is On incentive search at switchison.org, which lists programs by ZIP code

Which upgrades usually qualify

Regional programs have focused on heat pumps for heating and cooling and heat pump water heaters, plus panel upgrades needed to support them. Gas furnaces and standard AC replacements rarely qualify anymore.

Homes in Ardenwood and Warm Springs with rooftop solar often see the best overall payback from electrification, with or without a rebate.

How we handle it

Before we write a quote, we check what is open for your address and whether the equipment we recommend qualifies. If a rebate is paid to the contractor, we show it as a line-item discount. If you apply yourself, we give you the paperwork you need.

Questions we hear often

Can I still get a federal tax credit for a heat pump in 2026?

Not under 25C, which ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. Check with a tax professional about any other provisions.

Are there rebates for gas furnaces?

Rarely. Current programs focus on heat pumps and heat pump water heaters.

Do rebates require a specific contractor?

Some do. Contractor-paid programs require a participating installer.
